The real Doris French
Doris French came to Nevada in September of 1928 as a kindergarten and music teacher when Wells Grammar School added kindergarten to their curriculum. Previously she taught six years in the rural schools of Nebraska and Oregon, and kindergarten two years at Minatare, Nebraska.
In 1929, she moved to Ely and organized the first kindergarten in the Ely City School. She also served as a part-time librarian. In 1933, she came to Las Vegas to fill a kindergarten vacancy at the Westside Grammar School. In addition, in 1939 and 1940 she taught a half day kindergarten at Fifth Street Grammar School, and in 1941 held a half day session in North Las Vegas. In 1942 increase enrollment at West Side required two kindergarten classes, and she chose to return there full time. In January 1943, Miss French was appointed Principal at West side in addition to the kindergarten. In 1948 the school was enlarged to accommodate all eight grades and required a full time principal. She filled this position until her retirement in 1966, having served 46 years as an educator. Miss French graduated from Torrington, WY High School in 1929; attended Teacher's College in Kearney, NE; University of Colorado, Boulder and National College of Education, Cheney, Washington from which she received a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Elementary Administration. |
